On December 11th 2017 The Wesley Singers sang a programme of Christmas music in the foyer of the Bexley Wing of St James's Hospital in Leeds. The Yorkshire Cancer Appeal described it thus: 'The hugely talented The Wesley Singers performed in Bexley Wing in Monday 11th December providing a diverse range of wonderful music and Christmas cheer for patients, visitors and staff.'
The first conductor of The Wesley Singers, Mr David Carr, who has sung in the bass section since his retirement as conductor, has decided that the time has come to retire from singing. It was very fortunate that the Revd Roger Ducker, who was Chair of the Leeds District when the choir was formed 32 years ago, was invited to the service and that he was able to present flowers and a card to David on this, his last appearance with the Wesley Singers. David has done so much for the choir over the years, not only as its founding conductor, but also as a valuable member of the bass section and occasional contributor of interludes to our concerts. David will be sadly missed amongst our fellowship. Thank you again David for all you have done.
On Saturday 17th October 2015 the choir celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a gala concert, 'Sounding Brass and Voices', at Lidgett Park Methodist Church, conducted by Barry Jordan, along with The West Yorkshire Police Brass Ensemble, directed by Dave Collins. A diverse programme of some of our finer pieces was performed, accompanied by Julie Boocock (flute), Liz Kenwood (oboe), Giles Taylor (organ) and Pat Jordan (piano). The church was packed to capacity, with more than 250 people in the audience, and our performance was very warmly received. Participants and audience alike felt we had had a wonderful evening with tremendous atmosphere.
It was hoped that the concert would raise £3000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Members of the choir made donations beforehand to cover the expenses of the band, so all the ticket sale money went to the charity, along with some additional donations on the night. In the event, we overshot the target by a wide margin, and were delighted to find we had raised £3750!
We are very grateful to all of the guests who supported our performance, particularly to the band, who gave us some great foot-tapping music in their solos and very well-judged accompaniment in the joint pieces. We are especially thankful to Lidgett Park Methodist Church for hosting the occasion, and to the audience who turned out in such numbers and made it so successful.
A cheque was presented to Helen Murray-Sharpe for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at a choir rehearsal in November 2015.
